Identifying chaga in nature
Nature has an uncanny way of packaging its best healers in a form that allows us to recognise how to use them. Chaga Mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is a dark, coal like mass formed in the wound areas (e.g. poorly healed branch stubs) of birch and other trees. It can be identified by its black melanoma-like exterior and golden-orange interior. Chaga enjoys a symbiotic relationship with its host tree – it receives nutrients from the tree and in exchange it protects the tree from nasty pathogens that would otherwise shorten its life span. This gives us a clue about the healing signature of chaga.
Chaga is mainly found in the northern hemisphere in the cold Taiga forests of Siberia, Central Asia, northern China, Korea, Japan, Scandinavia, Canada and the US. It’s healing benefits have been celebrated for hundreds of years, particularly in Scandinavia and Russia – the name chaga means mushroom in Komi-Permyak, the traditional language of the Ural Mountain region. Chaga is now celebrated worldwide as a superfood.
Chaga Mushroom in Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine chaga mushroom is revered for its ability to supercharge our immune system. This is because it builds the Wei Qi – the energy field of life force (chi, qi, prana) that forms the protective ‘atmosphere’ surrounding our entire being.
How To Take Chaga Mushroom
Chaga is usually prepared as a tea or granulated tonic… And the good news – despite appearances it has an enjoyable earthy flavour with a hint of vanilla! Even the Russian Nobel Laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn sings its praises in his 1968 novel Cancer Ward…
“He could not imagine any greater joy than to go away into the woods for months on end, to break off this chaga, crumble it, boil it up on a campfire, drink it and get well like an animal.”
