22 Nov Supplements vs Wholefoods
Supplements aren’t intended to replace you food. Here at Maple St Acupuncture we really look to food as medicine, what is going into your body? This is going to explain to us a lot about where your body is at. Even so, sometimes we do chose to use supplements rather than dietary or herbal choices alone. Yes we consider herbs as food, when they are administered in their whole form as powders and teas.
When to use supplements and when to use food?
Ideally we can meet all of our nutritional needs via diet alone. Ideally. But this does not take into account the quickly evolving lifestyle we are a part of. Food is now grown in depleted soils, eaten weeks after it has been picked, and been exposed to all kinds of chemicals. It is grown to be quicker, fend off pests, and extend its shelf life, is not food grown for nutrition. It is food grown for the ‘economy’. Mass produced. Money turners. Belly fillers. This is going to greatly effect the condition of the food you eat. It may be delicious food, but is it going to help combat cancer & some of the other more aggressive diseases of today?
Sometimes supplementing can make a lot more sense. Especially when we consider the state of much of the food grown today & some of the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis.
When we have spent years growing & cultivating dysfunction & dis-ease in our bodies, it’s going to take time to recover to a state of good health.
This is where supplements can play a great role in boosting the body quickly & specifically. With supplements we can target specific physiological functions that are sluggish or excessive in the body, and moderate them with the relevant nutrient. This can be great for the elderly, someone on a restrictive diet, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, or someone with a medical condition. Even still, in no way should it ever be considered a substitute for food. More so a booster, a long side our diet. It’s also useful to look at is as temporary. Nope, it is not our intention to empty your wallets and have you pill-popping supplements!
Overall we prefer whole foods & herbs, perfect & complete in their full form, bound up with fibre & all kinds of nutrients therein. We have dried herbal teas & Traditional Chinese Medicine powdered herbs available in our clinic.
