Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years. In this time it has remained largely unchanged and this is for good reason – because it works! Viewing the body as a complex microsystem rather than a sum of its parts, TCM practitioners assist the body to return to a state of healthy homeostasis and balance. As it is a holistic model of healing and medicine, imbalances can be treated that are on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Acupuncture, herbs, cupping and lifestyle advice are used as treatment tools to achieve and maintain this balance.

TCM practitioners also view no two human beings as the same. There is a saying in Chinese Medicine that goes “One disease; many treatments. One treatment; many diseases” which implies not only the individuality of each person, but also the individuality of each treatment.

TCM views the body in terms of substances and elements, one of these fundamental substances is Qi or vital force. This Qi circulates throughout the body in pathways called meridians, carrying its energy from inside to outside, top to bottom, connecting the whole. Disharmony happens when blockages occur in these pathways, much like a bolder that rolls over a stream – water backs up behind the bolder, becomes stagnant, and barely trickles in front of the bolder resulting in a dry creek bed. An acupuncturist uses very fine, single use, sterile needles to insert into specific acupuncture points (junctures of Qi) to unblock the pathway to restore normal functioning and natural flow of Qi, thus encouraging the body’s own innate healing ability.

While symptoms are treated to make life nicer in the short term, the underlying cause is always addressed as long term health is the ultimate goal.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine supports health through balancing internal disharmonies within organ systems and fundamental substances (Qi, Jing, Shen, Blood), encouraging the body to heal itself.  As herbs are used in their natural form, they are gentle without harsh side effects.

Herbal formulas are tailored specifically to the individual considering current symptoms, presentation and needs.  Chinese Herbal formulas are unique in that each formula is precisely balanced, taking into account the therapeutic action of each herb and how they work together.

At Maple St Acupuncture and Natural Medicine, we use a combination of high quality FDA approved granulated herbs that are easy and convenient to prepare and take. One cup of Chinese Herbal tea twice per day is the usual recommendation.
